YMCA Camp Marston
LIT's - Leaders in Training
Ages 15-17, entering Grades 10-11
There is a myth that great leaders are “born that way”. Not true. Our belief is that leadership is simply a set of actions and words that guide others to identify and achieve goals. In the LIT program, we show young adults what great leaders do and say, then have them practice those skills in a splendid learning-lab (YMCA Summer Camp!).
The LIT’s are housed as their own small village, and begin their program with an overnight trip to San Diego’s backcountry as an early team-building adventure. With time sprinkled in for camp fun, they also learn through leadership development activities, help plan all-camp activities, and mentor under the guidance of the Leadership Director. During the second week, LIT’s are assigned to assist with an Explorer Cabin group. For many, this experience is the first time they are placed in a role modeling situation. It is unique, it is powerful.
In all, great friendships are made, unique learning, lots of fun and lifelong skills are included. Successful graduates of the LIT program are encouraged to apply for the Camp Assistant program the following summer.
CA's - Camp Assistants
Ages 16-17, entering grades 11-12
Camp Assistant is a three-week volunteer experience that forms the final transition between camper and counselor. Through voluntarism and service-learning, these young adults make a contribution to camp and essentially “earn their keep” (no fees charged).
CA’s volunteer not only in camp program, but pitch in with food service, maintenance and office tasks to receive brief, but informative experiences of the many facets of camp.
Acceptance in this program is very selective. Applicants can download the application here or call/email Simon at the camp office - (760)765-0642. Upon completion, CA’s are provided an evaluation and verification of Community Service Hours (applicable to many High School Graduation requirements).
