Potential International Applicants

(Camp Counselor/Ocean Lifeguard)

International appicants should apply directly to us BEFORE going through a placement agency.

If you are interested in spending a summer working with kids in a US summer camp that is great!  It is a wonderful experience if you are someone who is looking for an opportunity to challenge yourself, learn new skills, be a role model, share your knowledge, experience a new culture, meet a lot of wonderful people, and dedicate a summer season in service to others. If that describes you, then the next question to ask yourself is whether YMCA Camp Surf is the right camp for you this summer.

Staff positions at YMCA Camp Surf are highly competitive, and international placements are very limited.  To be considered you must be qualified to be a camp counselor and also certify as an ocean lifeguard (more info).

Basic qualifications:

  • Experience and or aptitude to work positively with children
  • Positive role model for campers of all ages: dress, social choices, etc.
  • Have limited time to yourself - 1.5 hours a day, 1 day off each week
  • Strong swimmer with ocean experience
  • Surfing and/or boady boarding experience.  Sailing, kayaking helpful.
  • Able to run 1.6K in under 8 minutes
  • Complete 550 meter open water swim in under 10 minutes
  • Available from June 1- August 28, 2010

If you meet these qualifications please apply online for Camp Counselor - Summer (Camp Surf), and send a cover letter and C.V. to the Summer Coordinator, Nat CorrallPlease do this BEFORE you go through a placement agency.  If your experience looks like a potential match, we will contact you for an interview and check references.  If we are interested in placing you at camp, we will work with you and an agency to assist in the visa process.  YMCA Camp Surf places most international staff through CCUSA, Bunac, and the YMCA ICCP program.

If YMCA Camp Surf is fully staffed or does not prove to be the best match for your skills this summer:

There are many organizations that can help you to work through the visa process and most also will help you to get placed in a camp this summer.

We have worked with the following organizations:

Camp Counselors USA

YMCA ICCP

Bunac

CCUSA and YMCA ICCP will help to place you in a camp.  Bunac will help you with the visa but you are responsible to find your own camp placement.  If you prefer to find your own camp, Bunac is a terrific organization.

The most important question to ask yourself, is if you are excited about a summer camp experience no matter what camp it is.  You may have found YMCA Camp Surf on youyr own or been referred by a friend, but there are many wonderful summer camps in the US, and even more campers waiting to meet you this summer!

Thank you for your interest in YMCA Camp Surf, kids, and summer camp.

Good Luck!
